Cambodia is one among the fastest economic growth (7% annually) countries in the Asia Pacific Region due to political stability, increase in local and international investments, tourism, construction industries. Despite the economic and population grows, there are new set of emerging challenges for the country, one of which the amount of waste generation and urban solid waste managements. The annual solid waste generation is approximately 3.65 million tons per year (2017) and increases between 10% to 15% percent every year. Waste generation in Phnom Penh 3,000 tons per day, Sihanouk Ville 600 tons per day and 400 tons per day in Siem Reap provinces. Among which 41% collected by companies, 11% recycle (collected by an individual for reselling including plastic, steels…), 48% non-collected household solid wastes found on the streets, rivers, and ocean. Mismanaged wastes cause negative impacts on the health and well-being of citizens, water quality, marine lives, wildlife, the tourism industry and it also contributes to the cause of global warming and climate change. ROC’s strategy is to address immediate problems through mobilizing millions of Cambodians across the country from public, private and citizen to lead or join cleanup legacy trashes (esp. plastic) on the ground, in the rivers, the ocean, and to close the tab through introducing comprehensive prevention programs as indicated in the wheel.
ROC believes actions bring tangible change in addressing waste problems in Cambodia ! Thus, our priorities are to cleanup legacy plastic wastes in the rivers and in the ocean through working together with Royal Government of Cambodia, mobilizing communities, private sectors, NGOs, UN agencies. Key events includes: World Cleanup Day (WCD), River Cleanup, Ocean Cleanup, ROC coordinates all cleanup activities across Cambodia. Converts 1 million plastic cups collected to 1 million trees. Let’s get involved and take a pledge today to keep our rivers, ocean clean and free from plastic pollution.
